  1. My article talks about the effects halftime has on athletic performance to start the second half of team sport competitions. Strength and Conditioning coaches, and exercise science professors collaborated on this article titled, "Half-Time Strategies to Enhance Second Half Performance In Team-Sports Players: A Review and Recommendations." A typical halftime of an athletic event last 10-20 minutes. This time allows players and coaches to strategies for the second half, players to cognitively relax and review their performance so far. Also this allows time for medical treatment, rehydration and recuperation. It has been studied and proven that athletes to start the second half tend to be more sluggish and aren't fully playing to the performance of the first half during the first few minutes of the second half of games. This down time during halftime has also had an increase risk of injury by up to 20% during the start of the second half for Premiere Leagues soccer players. Some factors that helped athletes perform better in the second half was a type of reactivation to the muscles and mind through various dynamic stretches. This is typically done during halftime in the final 3 minutes of the intermission, but isn't enough time for athletes to be fully alert to compete at a high level. The tie taken for strategy at halftime, with medical care and rehydration cuts into the time allotted for a solid 15 minute needed stretching time to activate all muscle groups. The stretching for 3 minutes, on average, does increase blood flow circulation and loosens some muscles along with raising body temperature. According to this articles findings only 58% of athletes went through a organized team re-warm up strategy before the second half commenced. These techniques are used for substitutes as well for some sports. Which may include moderate intensity running for sidelined players to heat up their body temperature to before entering the field of play. This is why during cold weather games players are given heated jackets, blankets, coats, space heaters and hand warmers to maintain body temp levels and stay at peak operating mobility and function. Dynamic stretching pre-second half is key for athletes to have the ability to play at a high intensity level to start the second half.

  2. My article talks about how Physical Therapy can help infants learn their motor skills. Many physical therapists have tried to show that working with infants on learning their motor skills will help them develop them faster. It is shown that depending on the infant’s intention will affect the type of motor skills they will learn. Also, it is proven that the way the infant interacts with the physical therapists is important. If the infant is not motivated to learn certain motor skills they will not be engaged in the activity and it will be unsuccessful. The place in which the therapy is being held also can determine how the infant learns. It needs to be a place that the infant is comfortable being in. This study has shown that infants can learn and progress their motor skills with physical therapy but there has to be motivation, intention, good relationship, and the right place.

  3. Effectiveness of Preoperative Physical Therapy for Elective Cardiac Surgery

There can be many pulmonary complications from a coronary artery bypass graft surgery which increases the risk of postoperative mortality. Breathing patterns can be altered by due to depression of the respiratory center from pre and post operative anesthesia. The surgical procedure itself can cause pulmonary function to be tweaked by hypoventilation, decreased mucus clearance, decreased respiratory muscle function, increased work of breathing, and hypoxia. Preoperative physical therapy focuses on improving functional pulmonary status in order to help reduce the postoperative complications. Other positive outcomes of doing this include length of postoperative hospitalization, respiratory caused mortality rate, health related quality of life, and financial costs. The data shows some improvement when measuring physical function, but the degree of change may not be clinically significant. Preoperative therapy and physical fitness influences the outcomes of patients by increasing functional capacity and breathing reserve. It assists in overall health which in turn impacts the patient’s recovery.

  4. Dogs are often used as models for common hum conditions such as periodontal disease. A study was performed on both humans and dogs, where they both had an oral test preformed. The test included taking samples from the gingival pockets. Both human and dogs presented with similarities in the prevalence of bacteria microfloria. Researchers now are trying to facilitate an effective treatment plan to reduce periodontal disease. Some of the treatment includes antibiotics but they are having a hard time trying to maintain the healthy bacteria that live in the mouth. The newly introduced antibiotic is killing the good bacterium and the periodontal disease is only relapsing. Researchers are trying to find a healthy balance to remove or reduce the affects of periodontal disease while trying to maintain oral health.

  5. A national health-care priority is managing, preventing, and dealing with the effects of chronic diseases. Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is a life threatening disease that causes many challenges in a person’s life, especially in children. It is common for disability to be present at many different times in a person’s life with Type 1 Diabetes because of the extensive and complex treatment. Children with T1D are more prone to negative behavior and a change in daily living. Occupational Therapy has shown to be effective in dealing with chronic illnesses. Occupational therapists are able to help people with T1D with self management. Specifically, they focus on planning activities, sophisticated and flexible management, and living daily life in a goal oriented way. This journal article wants to call occupational therapists to action to extend their practice to create occupation focussed interventions for adolescents dealing with a lifetime of complicated self management.

  6. Endurance/distance running has been around for many years and has evolved into one of the most popular sports. Distance running puts athlete's at a vey high risk for stress injuries. The purpose of my article was to determine the effectiveness of barefoot running and if it poses a decrease in injury. Barefoot running has given many people positive results but it does not always work for everyone. There are many many factors that must be taken into account. Such as: "differences in lower extremity alignment, gait patterns, and running biomechanics." These factors are dependent on the person and should not be generalized for the public. A runner's "Kinematic and gait patterns" change when running shod, with shoes, or barefoot. This change in pattern can actually be the cause of injury. Not taking the proper acclimatization steps can also be a cause for injury; not barefoot running itself. The article concludes that while many people have had success with barefoot running it does not work for everyone. The decision to switch to barefoot running should be made by the athlete with the consult of a clinician.

  7. The article I read talked about the side effects and toxicities from receiving chemotherapy in patients who had blood cancers. Its main purpose was to teach patients self-care from side effects of chemotherapy and also to get direct results from patients by using an app. This was accomplished by teaching patients receiving chemotherapy how to use a smartphone app called 'Telehealth', which monitors the side effects the patients are experiencing. However, this was completely in the hands of the patients for results. The main point of this experiment was to see if using an app and receiving real-time side effect results, would benefit the patient and health care provider enough to use in the future to enhance the pre-chemotherapy education, patient self-care and side effect communication. It concluded that it would need more patients to test it on, however, for the patients that they did use, it worked and greatly benefitted both the patient and health care provider.

  8. In the article I read about chiropractics, it discussed how chiropracting and get adjusted can help people with sleep disorders, or just help people sleep in general. There was a study done in Spain where the scientist found a like between sleep-disorders and chiropractic care. They found that certain neuropeptides increase when patients are adjusted. The prominent one that is released is orexin A, which is known as a hypocretin. According to the research hypocretins have important roles in sleep regulation, because they have a direct affect on the amount of serotonin made in our body, and serotonin is is responsible for our mood, appetite and sleep. So it makes sense why being adjusted would help with sleep disorders, but more research needs to be done.

  9. The article that I read for my assignment was about how High-Intensity interval training (HIIT) affected athletic performance. It was a study done on 24 hockey players that we assigned randomly to either continuous endurance exercise or HIIT for a 4 week process. After the 4 week process the athletic trainers measured the hockey players body comp., muscle thickness, etc. and compared it to the same information that they took before this study on each player. After the study they proved that players are able to utilize short term HIIT to help create a positive gain on their body comp., muscle mass, etc.

  10. The article I read discusses a United States counterinsurgent initiative to expand health services in and throughout Afghanistan. It discusses how they plan on doing this to reduce child mortality and increase the capacity of the Afghan government in maintaining this service to their people. The U.S. government wants to provide and train emergency care services to all Afghans people in and around rural areas and construct health facilities and provide health related programs to all of Afghanistan’s people. Much of these services that are provided now are short term, unstable and unreliable and often fake ways to suck up government funding. The counterinsurgent strategy that the U.S. is trying to accomplish is to help develop this area of the countries government to legitimize the Afghan government in the eyes of their own people to hopefully curb the desire of the Afghan citizens to join radical terrorist groups to fight against a government that they find uncappable of providing proper services to them.

  11. The article I chose to read was all about health service managers and researchers coming together on projects. The whole reason behind the article was to see if adding health service managers to help researchers on their projects, would make the projects more viable. The authors took data from ten different case studies and did several interviews with managers and chief investigators. In the end it is said that; “Management fellows improved the relevance and quality of research through enhancing its validity, efficiency and credibility” (Bullock). In the article, it says that the management fellows were able to make the projects for credible because they were able to get a lot more participants in the case studies and even better sites for the studies. They were able to do that because they were “in the know” and were able to get better resources than the researchers alone.

  12. The article I read was about Colon cancer prevention. It's main purpose was to get people to take the screening seriously. The reason being because colon cancer is the third most prevalent type of lethal cancer. A cancer that doesn't show signs until its too late. The experiment called for patients who had not had the recommended screening at 50 year of age limiting the participants from 50-75. There were many reasons for the delay in the participants involvement due to colonoscopy is an invasive procedure that causes some time away from work. Most of the participants didn't get the screening because of laziness, high cost, and others would rather die of the cancer. In conclusion, there has been more people who are aware of colon cancer and colonoscopy through the years. But, the biggest take away from this is what the majority of the participants did not know. Which was there are several other screening options other than the colonoscopy.

  13. My article talked about the benefit physical therapy has on schizophrenia. In our society people with schizophrenia have a higher number of physical comorbidities. There is also a substantial mortality gap between people with, and without schizophrenia. Physical therapy could help to reduce some of the symptoms seen in schizophrenia patients. This is achieved through exercises such as strength exercises, aerobics, and yoga. The main purpose of using these technique is to attempt to increase the mental health of these patients. Overall this could be a great way to help people in our society suffering with schizophrenia, and improve their quality of life.

  14. The article I picked out talks about how important it is to have Athletic Trainers in secondary schools. It's main purpose was to get the point across that all around the world there are millions of high school students who not only participate in one sport but up to three sports in their high school careers. Injuries are very common when it comes to playing a sport so having someone who can react fast enough can make a huge difference rather than waiting a couple minutes for emergency help. Working at a high school as an AT allows for two different schedules. One you can either work full-time or come in during the afternoons to work during the practices. However, in this article they recommend that if becoming an AT is what you want to do then it's your best option to work full-time. This is because when you work in a high school setting you won't get paid as much rather then if you worked at a college or for a pro sports team. There were many other good points that this article pointed out that made me want to help athletes that struggle through injuries like I did in high school.

  15. My article talks about the benefits of graduate-level professional education in athletic training. It mainly focuses on NATA’s decision to move the professional degree from bachelor’s to a graduate degree. Which was done because of the growth in the profession and being more uniform with healthcare education. With changes being made they talk about how doing away with the internship model held to be more of a commitment on students, providing quality education training to students helping the impact of patient care. Also, that students would be able to get into clinical action earlier, which helps with preparation to practice. Then they go over their experiment on students in Professional Master’s athletic training program to see the perceived benefits of the model. They discovered that student maturity was a factor in the transition to the graduate-level model, and that some challengers were avoided by making the switch.

  16. My article is about how long does it take to have cognitive impairment after being diagnosed with a concussion. This article found that athletes were most likely to have deficits on both sideline and computerized cognitive measures 24 to 48 hours post injury. They also found that sideline measures are useful for identifying and diagnosing concussions, the current results indicate they are not effective in predicting neurocognitive impairment or symptom reports at 1 to 2 weeks post injury. IMPACT testing can actually hurt the brain if being used to early because it uses a lot of neurocognitive functions such as memorization.
